The Grotto!

This summer the family has been waking up early to meet at a local trail head. We decided that we were going to find The Grotto on Father's Day, Sunday, June 16, 2019.

We headed to Farmington, Utah and drove through the little town, behind Lagoon Amusement Park finally turning at the city cemetery. We followed Woodland Drive to the East, around a bend, and onto the dirt road. There is a parking area, near the reservoir, for the Davis Creek Trail Head.

To get to this secret grotto, we headed up the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. We followed the trail for about a half mile before coming to Steed Creek. The water was still really high for Mid-June. We had to take off our shoes to cross its icy current!

After drying off and donning our hikers once more, we hit the trail. We walked and talked and enjoyed the sights when we realized that we missed our turn-off. I mapped that we walked 3/4 mile past our turn-off. Do the math...a total of 1-1/2 extra miles!

We walked back to the turn-off and headed up. We could see how we missed it. It was facing away from us as we walked by.
This part of the trail was narrow and less traveled. We would walk through the forest and pop out on a ledge or an overlook, then back into the forest. There were a couple of steep places that had ropes tied to them as hand holds.

We made our way down into the bottom of the canyon and were suddenly in The Grotto! It was immediately recognizable. For a moment I thought I would see fairies or gnomes! There was a waterfall and many small rivulets that cascaded over a rock overhang.
